A Walk in the Park

For me, there is a certain excitement as a snowstorm arrives. It’s time to take my favorite kind of photos: snowy ones! There is nothing quite like the beautiful tones of pristine white snow. It can be blue white, sparkle white, rosy white....if reflects the tones of the light at the moment I take the photo. I love watching that...and trying to capture it. With just the right amount of overnight snow on the ground (6-8 inches) it‘s time to head to my favorite place for winter wonderland photos. Actually it may not be my favorite place, but it is a lovely place that I have a fair chance of getting to in a storm. Main Street Wellsboro: destination one mile.

The hardest part of the trip is our driveway. Especially the end of it where it intersects with the road beyond it. But there were no plow drifts to speak of as I wound up the motor and blasted through. Once out of the drive it was easy sailing. The highway at the end of our road had been plowed...not salted, but definitely plowed. It was like being in a big snowmobile as I rode the short way to town.

Once In town, it is always good to find a spot to park that won’t be an inconvenience to plow trucks and others working to open the town up for the day. Before daybreak, there is a certain level of activity...plow trucks, snow blowers, people shoveling. And I try to stay out of their way.

Pulling on my favorite hat, I dash out of the car, so excited to see the wonderland ahead of me. With my tall boots, warm coat, and hat I will be warm everyplace but my hands, I often don’t bother to wear gloves because they interfere with the camera operations. I jam my cold hands into my pockets and cradle my camera under my arm, with it snowing so hard, my camera will be snow covered soon if I don’t protect it. Me? It‘s fun to be snow covered.

Off I go, up and down Main Street. I give the snow blowers wide berth and move into the roadway when I get close to them. Then as cars and trucks come towards me, I dash back onto the sidewalk. The snow is deep and at this point almost over my tall boots in the intersections where snow has been piled between the sidewalk and the road.

There is a certain sense of exploration this morning. I notice how the gaslights steam and hiss as snow falls around the vents above the wicks in the lanterns. You can always tell an original gaslight from a retrofitted LED bulb gaslight. It’s the amount of snow piled on top of the lantern. The new-fangled ones always have snow piled on them. The old fashioned ones are alive and breathing.

The trees this morning aren’t too snow covered so today isn’t a day for pictures of light colored trees. Their branches are mostly dark against the almost black sky that slowly lightens to dark dark indigo blue. The roadways are snow covered and white today..not the usual dark salted look we usually see. There is a lot to absorb this morning.

Sometimes I am the only set of footprints out here today. I turn around and look at my tracks as they wander down the pathway, They do wander. And I imagine the folks who like to follow my footprints doing that later in the morning as they snake their way along behind me. I hope they smile.

I love my world. Today is a good day to be in it. ❤️
